Outdoor & Solar Lighting: An Australian Guide

Outdoor and solar lighting — Australian backyard at dusk with festoon and solar path lights

A well-lit backyard stretches summer evenings out for hours and makes the whole place feel safer. The good news for Australian homes: with our sunshine, much of it can run on solar at zero ongoing cost. Here's how to plan it.

Start with the job, not the fitting

Outdoor lighting does three things — and most yards want a bit of each:

  • Atmosphere for entertaining — warm, low, inviting light over the table and seating.
  • Wayfinding — gentle light along paths, steps and garden edges so no one trips.
  • Security — bright, motion-triggered light at entries, driveways and dark corners.

Solar vs wired

Solar is the easy win in Australia: no wiring, no power bill, and you can put it anywhere the sun reaches. Modern solar lights charge by day and run for hours after dark. The trade-off is output and runtime in shade or deep winter — so use solar for atmosphere and paths, and consider mains power where you need guaranteed brightness.

Wired/plug-in gives constant, controllable light for entertaining areas and security. Anything hardwired to mains must be installed by a licensed electrician — plug-in and solar you can set up yourself.

Check the IP rating

Outdoors, water resistance isn't optional. The IP number tells you how protected a light is:

  • IP44 — splash-resistant; fine for covered patios and verandas.
  • IP65 — rain-safe; the right choice for exposed gardens, paths and walls.
  • IP67+ — handles heavy rain and brief submersion; for in-ground and very exposed spots.

What to use where

A simple backyard plan

  • Festoon lights strung over the entertaining area
  • Solar path lights leading to the door and along garden edges
  • A motion-sensor flood light at the back entry for safety

That trio covers atmosphere, wayfinding and security — and most of it runs on sunshine. Browse Outdoor & Garden Lighting to put it together.
